3. Purchase standards of in-store digital piano customers.

Online shoppers take into account of blogs, purchase reviews, recommendation from environments. Shoppers on Las Vegas Music website also decide to purchase a certain model after researching different blogs and reviews while searching for the lowest price.

All shoppers do not want to buy a bad product. Also, all shoppers do not want to buy a good product at a higher price. Most shoppers want to buy good product at a lower price, so they shop around, negotiate price, and purchase after dedicating some time.

How would it work at an offline store? Not all shoppers are the same but most will go in this order…

  1. Shoppers look at the brand
  2. Shoppers look at the price
  3. Shoppers listen to the sound
  4. Shoppers feel the touch
  5. Shopper look at different accessories and functions…

These are the order that most shoppers go through, some shoppers will even pick out different products and compare them to each other.

The suitability of customers is all different in many cases. Who will use it? Where will it be used? Who is buying it?…. Would be the most basic questions to ask before narrowing down to a product.

Some shoppers say “Do not trust the salesman; he will lead you to pianos with best margin.” This would be a wrong statement to believe and most salesmen wouldn’t sell that foolishly nowadays.

Nowadays, the online is widely used and most shoppers will research information before stepping into a store so most will not be easily enticed into making impulsive purchases.

Salesmen must know that there are many shoppers that are more expert than the  experts.

Many dealers like Las Vegas Music, will help to guide shoppers to the digital piano that fits customer’s  objectives. This is the wise way of sales, if salesman were to sell only to satisfy his or her margin  and incentives, it will cause huge side effects.

Shoppers must ask themselves questions such as, who will use it? Where will it be used? What are  functions that I need? What is the price range of pianos I am looking for? Before narrowing down  to a product. There can be different reasons such as, for the kids, for the purpose of recital and concert, or as a hobby… locations can include, homes, church, dormitories, school, outdoor activities, etc. As for the price, buyers might increase their price range after being exposed to items of higher quality. It is hard to lower one’s standard after being exposed. However, let’s not lose initial standard.

Knowledge and perception of the salesman is very important. Without knowledge it will be hard to explain the product and inability to perceive what the customer truly wants will cause dissatisfaction in shoppers and there will be bad side effects.

After hearing from most offline shoppers in store… each have different opinion what great sound is.  They might select the product depending on the sound. However, the touch and action is different between brands so customers try and feel the touch as well. Some might make the decision after experiencing different touches… most shoppers choose brand that they know the most. Even if it is a good brand, even if it is a great product, shoppers will be in doubt of hasty purchase when it comes to an unknown brand. Also, all price standards are set from online.

After the product is in congruent to what they looked for and the product is decided, price will be negotiated. Thus, we believe online shopping might be the way that is more preferred. In store, it is hard to compare prices from different stores. However, it is possible to compare different retail price without even being face to face. Plus, shopper won’t even have to carry a heavy piano all the way home when shopped online.

With prices put aside (same price levels are used by shoppers when deciding), brand is selected depending on sound performance and usual standard of purchase in-store is based on Touch > Brand > Style > Warranty > accessory service. The brand that most satisfies this is the brand that sells the most.

Las Vegas Music would like to explain what we observed as we provided digital pianos online in the past in numerical order. Please read it before you make any digital piano purchase and hope this will guide you through the purchase.

And more…. It will guide you in your purchase, will provide all our best knowledge and opinion of the employees of Las Vegas Music, offer the best suitable product based on the intentions of the customer and will not make any biased opinion by pushing or recommending a certain product.

2. You MUST know this before purchasing a digital piano

Many consumers probably won’t pick out  particular brand of a digital piano and  model before buying. Most  pre-qualify  choices to 2-3 brands and even look at  different models under the umbrella before  making any buying decisions.

The weakness point of many online  shoppers is that they purchase without the  chance to physically see it.

Most times,  there might not be any nearest  dealers or  the nearest dealer might not  have a  particular model.  Local shoppers  face the  same problem in these cases…  Guitar  Center, Sam Ash aren’t specialized  in  digital  pianos so they have limits on  displaying as well. Also, if those dealers  don’t have other brand authorized  dealership then it will be even harder. Yamaha dealers will display mostly Yamaha products. Kawai dealers  will display Kawai products. It will be very hard to compare every different product. At the end, many  shoppers end up taking advice online and comparing products on Youtube as a source of decision maker.  Not saying this is a bad decision. However, there is a chance of disappointment after purchase.

Certainly, purchasing after experiencing can be better, but honestly, online purchase can earn you better  price compared to offline purchase and can simply be a comfortable purchase. Many prefer to shop online  due to these benefits.

Then, why are there expensive digital pianos and inexpensive digital pianos?

The standard is different depending on the company but prices are different mainly because of the keyboard action and the speaker power.

Some might say price of digital piano differs depending on the number of function of the piano. This statement maybe true for professional digital pianos such as arrange keyboard, synthesizers, pro-stage pianos but it is not the case in normal home digital pianos.

When cost of making an action increases or the quality of speaker power increases, the more expensive the piano will be.

Most digital piano companies have different keyboard action systems. Here is order of action quality per brand.

Yamaha — GHS < GH < GH3 < GH3X < NWX < Specialized
Roland —- Ivory G < PHA4 Standard < PHA4 Concert
Kawai —- AHA IV-F < AWA PROII < RHII < RHIII < GF
Kurzweil – LK < FATAR < FATAR WOOD
Casio —— ALL WEIGHTED SCALED

It uses actions in shown in order above… Not all, but most digital pianos will increase in price as its action used increases in quality.

One thing we must all keep in mind regarding piano keyboards… We often hear, “Heavier keys are always better keys…” or, “digital pianos always have lighter keys” These two statements are WRONG ideas to have.

Athletes practice with their lighter body with a heavy weights and weighted belts. Same analogy is that when you practice with heavy keys, you might perform better with a lighter touch at a recital or concert so pianists and professionals practice this way as many teachers claim so.

It is not recommended for anyone under the age of 10 to practice with heavy keys. It can be too much stress to the finger joints for minors… and young pianists might become drained of playing too soon if it is too vigorous physically. Usually bad keys are heavy and slow reaction which hinders from controlling the strength of the sounds.

Good keys are keys that allow you to easily express different strength of the tone… In other words it should allow you control strength of the volume freely.

Some brands of digital piano usually use same sound chip. If headphones are used instead of attached speakers, then it will result in almost same sound. Different models under same brands have different sounds when it is played with attached speakers because speaker power and speaker quality differs depending on the model.

Here are some important specifications to observe when purchasing a digital piano :

  1. 88 weighted grade hammer action

This means the digital piano has 88 keys with heavier on lower pitched keys and gets lighter as pitches increase on keys which is similar action system as an acoustic piano. I highly recommend digital pianos like this. There are differences in quality depending on the brand, but most digital pianos have this system. Actual action moves in a way where control of velocity would be possible.

  1. Number of speaker and speak power

Multiple speakers will allow  surround-sound which will make sound  grandeur. As    for speaker power, even  if the sound chip is excellent, the  speaker must also have  excellent sound  power or it would be unusable.  (however, this would not be case if  headphones  are to be used.)

  1. Polyphony

This is the digital piano’s ability to play layered notes at the same moment. If the digital piano has 128 polyphony, then it can play 128 different notes at the same moment. Most will have 64-128-192-256. Higher the polyphony, more the complete it will sound. Most pianos will have 128 polyphony. We also believe 128 number of polyphony is good enough.

  1. Escapement

This is the click-feel that most grand pianos have on their keys. When keys are pressed slowly on grand piano, it will click and press. This type of touch isn’t available on upright pianos… This system allows the hammers to move faster when keys are clicked rapidly at multiple times. This is a system usually found on high quality digital pianos.

  1. Accompany

This is a type of a rhythm, in which background music will accompany songs played by the performer. Depending on the model and brand, these functions will have different quality… When enjoyable rhythm such as pop, latin, waltz are played, it can magnify the experience. However, these functions are only available through high quality digital pianos. The importance of these fuction will depend on the performer.

Other functions include quantity of voices, USB, and etc. Quantity of functions isn’t  always correlated with the price. However, we recommend the USB function. If USB  function is available, connection to smartphones, pads, and computers are possible  and can enhance the enjoyment. This can allow additional functions such as  composing and will make your digital piano use much better.

Lastly, there are shoppers that put huge emphasis on design and finish of the digital  piano.

The finish of the digital piano is much different compared to the acoustic piano. Polish  or white colored acoustics pianos are less expensive in the case of acoustics. However,  polishes are much more expensive when it comes to digital pianos. If there is more  design or if the finishes are big, it will be more expensive just like the acoustics…. larger pianos will usually have bigger speakers that make grandeur and realer sound. If there is one similarity between acoustic and digital pianos is that bigger piano will mean an increased price.

Las Vegas Music would like to explain what we observed as we provided digital pianos online in the past in numerical order. Please read it before you make any digital piano purchase and hope this will guide you through the purchase.

1. Acoustic vs Digital Piano

During piano purchases, this is what customers consider and are in concern of. Many customers read certain blogs, consult piano teachers, consult pianists, and even ask friends and family to make their purchasing decisions.

Owner of Las Vegas Music is actually an industry veteran who has more than 20 years of experience in acoustic piano sales. He is knowledgeable in different types of piano. With huge experience in piano technologies and piano performance, he has the kin ability to observe customer needs and is able to recommend best suitable piano for each customers.

Although we can explain endlessly about even miniscule details of the piano, we will stay brief and to the point regarding the basics for now and we will write more about the details in the future.

Acoustic and Digital piano are definitely different in sound and touch. How can the natural sound and sound from speaker be the same? However, the companies that develops digital pianos in effort to sample the best sounds from grand pianos to pursue better sound and achieve improvements.

Honestly, even different acoustic pianos of same brand and model have different tonality and color just like how each human being have unique voices. Thus, selecting the right acoustic piano is very difficult.

Also, attractiveness of sound and tonality is very subjective and can be expressed in many ways. Clear sound, thick sound, deep sound, light sound, soft sound, strong sound, and etc…. Different people prefer different sound.

This is the reason why even people with different people have different opinion on the same exact pianos.

What is YOUR favorite sound of the piano?…. If you select the piano that your teacher recommends, you are selecting your piano teacher’s favorite sound. (With you and your kids opinion omitted)

Fortunately, most digital pianos have the technology to play variety of piano tonality.

——————————————————————-Concert, Grand, Upright, Mellow, Bright, etc.

You are able to select your favorite voice to match your preference with digital pianos.

The precision of the sound will be more accurate with digital pianos also. Of course, acoustic pianos that aren’t tuned will be much less precise than digital pianos that stay permanently consistent in sound.

On offline stores, you often hear shoppers say, “We already have an acoustic piano at home, and just to play once or twice a year we need to tune each time…” Even if the piano is unused most acoustic pianos require tuning in every 6 month. It also requires regular action adjustment, hammer voicing, and much other maintenance that come at hefty price. Hence, many musicians say, “Acoustic piano is the most difficult instrument to maintain….”

Due to these reasons, many people prefer digital piano.

Also, many pianists prefer digital piano due to nightly sessions, and environmental factors. Many schools prefer digital pianos as well.

Besides the sound, actions of digital piano are improving. If you just compare the action of upright and grand pianos, they are two different worlds.

Acoustic upright piano moves 2-3 different spring action  to cause the hammer to hit the spring, in which if the  spring comes loose, then the action becomes very  difficult. Because of this, upright pianos are not able to  make any sound even when pressed many times. Grand  pianos work in differently. The action system of grand  pianos works just like a seesaw. Action parts are heavier  than keys, so when pressed it will cause it to hammer.  Most classic pianists perform with the grand piano. When  performed on upright pianos there are limits on  expressing fast touch, different strength and every  nuance.

This is why, many students who practice on upright  piano, perform poorly on stage with a grand piano.

Digital pianos are built to emulate the action system of the grand piano.

Most digital pianos do use spring but the system itself is very similar. There are some digital pianos that  have    systems that are mostly same.

Is digital piano better than acoustic? Not all the time. If you can face and endure regular maintenance    procedures and costs, then you might just enjoy the uniqueness of the acoustic piano that you won’t find  from a  digital piano.

However, compared with an old acoustic piano or new mediocre acoustic pianos, digital piano might just be  a  better decision.

Shopping and purchasing decision is the right of the consumer. There is no correct answer to this question.    Your opinion is most important when deciding between acoustic vs. digital piano.

Las Vegas Music would like to explain what we observed as we provided digital pianos online in the past in numerical order. Please read it before you make any digital piano purchase and hope this will guide you through the purchase.

Roland RD 2000 PHA-50 Plastic + Wood Hybrid Keys

Roland PHA50 action

PHA-50, which is Roland’s best key action yet, is installed in RD 2000. The combination of plastic and wood makes the RD 2000 look more natural, The escapement feature is integrated in the PHA-50, which will make players feel the action of an actual piano, because the wood parts will vibrate. It also feels natural when sliding the keys.

*Escapement –  the mechanism that allows the hammer to clear the string after striking, so that the string can vibrate (TheFreeDictionary).

The hammers of grand piano are positioned horizontally and therefore get affected by gravity directly, which enables faster key recovery. Hammers of upright pianos are positioned vertically with springs (jack).

Roland DP603 Home-service Warranty

moving piano

Image from shutter-stock (Volodymyr Tverdokhlib)

Digital pianos are not so big compared to acoustic pianos, but they are still heavy and take some volume. When your digital piano malfunctions, even if you have a warranty, you’ll have to bring your digital piano to the nearest service agency. The service agency could be a few hundred miles away, you could be living alone, or you could not have a big enough car for your piano. Roland provides home service warranty so you don’t have to do any hassle when your DP603 malfunctions. A technician will visit your home and fix the problem. Roland offers 5 years of parts + 2 years of labor warranty for DP603.

Roland DP603 Pedals

Grand pianos have 3 pedals:

-Damper (sustain) – located on the right, takes damper off the keys to make sound to resonate.

-Una Corda (soft) – located on the left, changes the volume of tone and timbre of sound.

-Sostenuto – located on the middle, sustain selected note(s) while other notes are not sustained.

And most upright pianos do not have Una Corda and Sostenuto pedals, they have half blow pedal and practice pedal instead:

-Half blow – This pedal is similar function as Una Corda but it is mechanically different because instead of hammers move aside to hit less string, hammers go closer to the strings.

-practice (muffler, mute) – This is completely different than Sostenuto pedal because this pedal just places a felt-fabric curtain between the hammers and string to make smaller sound.
Roland DP603’s 3 pedals are grand piano’s pedals.

Roland DP603 Physical Modeling vs. Ordinary Sampling

Instead of recording each key with different velocity (sampling), Roland came up with a computerized algorithm to produce the natural sound of piano called “physical-modelling”. This means that players are able to express even intricate details with the DP603. It can simulate the different resonances from different piano voices since they all have different materials and design.

Roland DP603 3D Ambience

When playing alone with headphones, the 3D ambience function will make players feel like the sound of the piano is resonating all around them, as if they are playing piano at a studio or concert hall.

roland-dp603-bluetooth

On board lesson function| Roland DP603 has over 300 songs in the system for players to listen, repeat (loop), and master.

Roland DP603 Bluetooth

Roland DP603 supports bluetooth 4.0. It can be connected to multiple devices (supports Android, Windows, and IOS) for music applications (ex. GarageBand). And it has a bluetooth recognition function, which means, you can connect the piano to an apple device, and have the device to turn the sheet music automatically for you. And it will give users easier control for piano option changes.

Yamaha MOXF

Yamaha MOXF8

**(This review is based on Yamaha MOXF8 and is simplified)

Yamaha MOXF series is affordable synthesizer workstation lineage of Motif XF. It has sound quality and other technologies of MOTIF XF in it. MOXF has sufficient data (740mb of wave ROM, 3977 wave-forms) MIDI keyboard controller, DAW and VST control, internal USB audio and MIDI interfacing, onboard sequencing, and DAW/VST softwares. Sounds are pristine and controls are intuitive. Yamaha MOXF has 2 stereos output so user can export the music data separately (ex. piano & mic). This is the flagship synthesizer + workstation in this price range. Yamaha MOXF has more effects than last series MOX, and it has flash board slot.

Basic Introduction video of Yamaha MOXF

Yamaha MOXF Sound Demo

Yamaha MOXF Features

Yamaha Motif XF Sound Quality

Yamaha MOXF has MOTIF XF sound quality which has basically all the instrument sounds you can think of plus vintage and synthesizer sounds.

Yamaha MOXF has two of Yamaha’s best grand pianos CFIIIS and S6 which can satisfy any player.

– VCM effects

Yamaha MOXF Virtual Circuitry Modeling

Yamaha’s VCM technology demonstration with MOTIF XF

Yamaha physically modelled the analog mixers of 1970s’ and 1980s’, and installed it in MOXF, it can even simulate the physical rotary speaker as well.

Flash memory expandability

yamaha-moxf-flash-memory-expandability

Yamaha MOXF is compatible with the sound content developed for the MOTIF XF and MOX. User can install either 512MB or 1024MB Flash Memorory that can save customized samples, it can approximately add about 2000 more wave-forms.

Performance mode to enhance your creativity

Yamaha MOXF Performance Mode

Yamaha MOXF allows players to combine up to 4 voices or arpeggios into one MIDI channel, so you can use other MIDI channels for extra sounds like drum and bass. Yamaha MOXF has 256 of preset performances that can support variety of music styles. Yamaha MOXF has 2000 drum arpeggios, 1300 for bass, and 1200 for guitar.

– Built-in sequencer to give shape to your inspiration

Yamaha MOXF offers strong built-in sequencer for music production without needing a computer, and real-time record function (step recording + copy function)

Advanced computer integration makes the MOXF the center of your music production studio

Yamaha Music Production

01 A complete suite of bundled software

Yamaha MOXF comes with few music production softwares like Editor, Remote Editor, Virtual analog synthesizer, and piano. All these softwares facilitate working with music production.

When MOXF is connected to computer, the piano works as audio interface. So when used with Cubase AI, you don’t need additional tool or software for recording system.

02 A single USB cable for both Audio and MIDI connections

Yamaha MOXF allows players to transmit both audio and MIDI file with 1 usb connection. It has 2 additional audio inputs to record other instruments to your computer as well. Since it is compatible with DAWs, analog input can be transferred to a software directly.

03 Music production with Cubase AI 7

***(descriptions below are directly from Yamaha)

Cubase AI 7

Cubase AI 7 is a version of Steinberg’s DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software made specifically to integrate with Yamaha music production synthesizers. Because the MOXF features both a MIDI and an audio interface you can record up to 32 audio and 48 MIDI tracks. You can even connect an analog mixer, microphone or guitar to the analog inputs, you can record any instrument to your computer via the MOXF. With built-in effects and the ability to control up to 16 VST instruments, Cubase AI lets you perform the complete computer music production process, including notation, scoring, and automated mixing.

04 Controlling DAW software

Yamaha MOXF has a special remote mode for controlling DAW software that allows you to use the buttons on its panel to open and close software windows, add instrument tracks and select VST instruments. The AI knob can be used as a jog wheel or set so that any parameter you mouse over in Cubase can be controlled automatically. You can also use the MOXF to control other popular DAW packages.

05 Steinberg Prologue VSTi

steinberg-prologue-vsti

Prologue is a wonderfully rich-sounding virtual analog synthesizer that will become an indispensable part of your VSTi arsenal. Prologue’s textural range includes lush, detailed pads and bright, acerbic leads and everything in between. Prologue’ s intuitive user interface provides full editing capabilities with access to its three oscillators, powerful multi-mode filter, four envelopes, two LFOs, a powerful modulation matrix, and onboard effects. And because Prologue is polyphonic with up to 128 voices, you’ll (probably) never run out of creative space.

06 YC-3B Tone Wheel Organ VST

YC-3B is a VST Instrument that reproduces the classic sound of tone wheel organs. It offers 64 different preset sound programs that you can also use to create your own original sounds, which you can then save as VST presets.

Playability and Usability

*Escapement –  the mechanism that allows the hammer to clear the string after striking, so that the string can vibrate (TheFreeDictionary). Player can feel tactile feeling of notch when presses a key.

Hammers of grand piano positioned horizontally therefore get affected by gravity directly, which enables faster key recovery. Hammers of upright piano are positioned vertically with springs (jack).
