Steve Wonder and Ray Kurzweil

Ray Kurzweil, the renowned founder of Kurzweil Music, is the very person who realized the future of computer music and who actually substantiated the power of computer music technology. Steve Wonder asked for realistic sound electronic  In the 1980s and 1990s he pioneered some of the industry’s most loved synthesizers. Kurzweil incorporated ‘MARA’ sound chip ino home digital piano products, and MP10 is the affordable one. Its sound is fairly similar to “organic” instrument sound compared to any other digital piano brand. See Kurzweil’s MP10 versatility in the video below: MP10 has 88 tones. They are very fun features to play with. I personally like MP10’s orchestra sound .

In terms of polyphony, (“polyphony” means how many sound it can be played simultaneously. For example, you may drum and strings layered along with piano, so higher number means that it can encompass more sounds at the same time. Nowadays, pretty much all of digital pianos in the market has enough polyphony to be played without loss of any sound) Kurzweil has 64-note polyphony, which sounds a little bit low.

“Polyphony” technology is important when it comes to electronic instrument. See the picture below. When you add sustain pedals, reverb, a lot of layers at the same time, 128-tone memory will soon be filled creating interruption to your music.

It only has 64 polyphony, but the “number” is not always necessarily important. There are some reviewers on the Internet who think Kurzweil’s 64 polyphony is too low, but the misunderstanding comes from the misunderstanding of Kurzweil’s advanced polyphony technology. To put it simple, there are one OSC (oscillator, sound wave) for each DSP (digital signal processor) in other brand’s technology. In Kurzweil’s polyphony technology, THREE OSCs are assinged for each DSP, so with Kurzweil’s polyphony technology, it can employ 3X more than the number. So technically speaking, Kurzweil’s MP10’s 64 polyphony represents 192-note polyphony.

This is Jordan Charles Rudess playing with Kurzweil K2600X. Back then, this Kurzweil model only has 48 polyphony, but we don’t feel any note dropping. It sounds amazing!
